Direct answer
WhatsApp Business AI is the Meta Business Agent, launched by Meta on June 3, 2026. It answers customers, books appointments, qualifies leads and calls in a person when needed, and it is free to get started. For companies with low volume and simple customer service, it is usually enough. When WhatsApp is a sales channel, with a team, systems and targets, a specialized agent delivers what Meta's AI does not yet do: the rules of the operation, integrations, sales recovery and measurement together with marketing.
77% of Brazilians usually talk to companies on WhatsApp, and 70% have already bought a product or hired a service through it, according to the Pesquisa WhatsApp no Brasil 2026, by Opinion Box (in Portuguese), a survey of WhatsApp use in Brazil, Flowup's home market. Replying fast has become part of the sale. Meta noticed and put an AI agent inside WhatsApp Business itself.
The question companies face has changed: it is no longer "is AI on WhatsApp worth it?" but "is Meta's free AI enough, or do I need something more?" This article shows what Meta's agent does, where it stops and how to decide.
The Meta Business Agent is Meta's AI agent for businesses. It was introduced on June 3, 2026, at the Conversations event in London, and it works on WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger (WhatsApp for Business, 2026).
According to Meta, the agent answers questions specific to the business, recommends products, books appointments, qualifies leads and closes sales. It also hands the conversation over to a person and summarizes what was discussed. More than one million businesses were already using these agents on WhatsApp and Messenger at the time of the announcement (InfoMoney, June 4, 2026, in Portuguese).
The agent started out free of charge. Meta announced paid subscription offerings for the following months. According to Exame (June 5, 2026), a Brazilian business magazine (article in Portuguese), small businesses will have a monthly plan, and large companies will pay based on consumption.
For many small businesses, Meta's agent is the right first step. It makes sense when:
Insight
A free AI inside the app itself raises the bar for the whole market. Replying in seconds stops being a differentiator and becomes the minimum. What sets a company apart is what happens after the first reply.
The Exame report (in Portuguese) lists the limits of the plan for small businesses: there is no full CRM, no checkout integration and no in-depth scheduling. Integrations with platforms such as Shopify, Zendesk and Salesforce appear in the offering for large companies, through the API.
In practice, this matters when the conversation is part of a sales operation:
A specialized agent is a platform built for selling and serving customers on WhatsApp, configured for each company's operation. In general, it adds four things:
Each conversation follows the company's logic: qualify, offer, schedule, negotiate or hand over to the team. Answers are checked against the knowledge base before they reach the customer.
Calendar, checkout, CRM, forms and internal systems connect to the agent. An abandoned cart or a submitted form becomes a conversation with context.
Anyone who stopped replying, left a boleto or Pix payment pending (Brazil's bank slip and instant payment methods) or forgot the cart receives a follow-up at the time and with the message the company has defined.
The source of each conversation is recorded, and the report shows the whole path: from the search or the ad to the meeting, the appointment or the sale.
Example
At 9:40 p.m., a consulting firm receives a contact who arrived through Google. The agent replies, asks two qualification questions, offers two time slots from the consultant's calendar and records the summary in the CRM. The next morning, the consultant opens the meeting already knowing what the client needs.
| Aspect | Meta Business Agent | Specialized agent |
|---|---|---|
| Who it is for | Small businesses with simple customer service | Companies where WhatsApp is a sales channel |
| Setup | In the app itself, with no implementation | Implementation with a knowledge base, rules and integrations |
| Integrations | Through the API, in the offering for large companies | Calendar, checkout, CRM, forms and internal systems |
| Sales recovery | Not among the announced features | Abandoned carts and pending boleto and Pix payments, with follow-up in stages |
| Measurement | Summaries and reports from the agent itself | Source of each conversation and a report connected to marketing |
| Cost | Free at launch, with a subscription announced | Implementation, license and Meta's per-message fees |
If the answer is "yes" to three or more, it is worth talking about a specialized agent. If it is "no" to almost all of them, start with Meta's agent and reassess in a few months.
Two changes made in 2026 should be factored in by any company that uses AI on WhatsApp:
The pricing details are in Official WhatsApp API: Pricing in Brazil and AI Rules in 2026.
Important
Meta's plans, prices and rules change often. Before deciding, check the current situation and ask for the proposal to show separately the cost of the technology, the cost of the implementation work and Meta's fees.
