GEO agency (Generative Engine Optimization): authority engineering so your brand can be cited by AI

Search is no longer a list of links. In August 2026, 80% of the searches where Flowup ranks in Brazil already showed an AI Overview (Semrush, Aug 2026). Ranking is still necessary; it is no longer sufficient.

Summary

GEO in seven points: key takeaways

The overlap between the sources cited in AI Overviews and the organic top 10 fell from 76% to 38% in seven months (Ahrefs, 2026). The two disciplines are compared in the GEO vs SEO guide.

  • Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring content so that AI systems can find, understand and cite it. For a company, that means structuring its information presence so that the AIs can find, understand and cite the brand.
  • Structure content in extractable blocks: definitions, steps, tables, FAQs and data with a stated source. This is the format generative engines reuse.
  • Large language models (LLMs), AI engines and AI tools build answers from sources they already understand. An AI model cites sources that are clear, consistent and verifiable.
  • AI generated content and AI generated answers already share the screen with traditional search results. Search ranking remains decisive: the AIs start from sources that have authority in search.
  • GEO works alongside SEO and answer engine optimization (AEO): being found, being the answer and being cited are layers of the same asset.
  • High quality sources win: real authorship, structured data, llms.txt and AI crawlers allowed.
  • To implement GEO, start with the B.I.N.A. Diagnosis: entity, information base and prompt panel, measured month by month.

What you get

What you get in a GEO project

At Flowup, GEO is not a package of posts: it is an authority engineering project with six named deliverables, defined timelines and continuous measurement. The entry point is the B.I.N.A. Diagnosis, which audits how your brand appears in AI answers today and sizes the project before any larger contract.

  • Citability audit

A prompt panel across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews: where your brand appears, how it is described and who is taking its place today.

  • Semantic Information Base

An architecture of pillar pages, clusters and a glossary that organizes the company's knowledge for people, search engines and AIs.

    Understand the deliverable

  • Official AI Knowledge Base

The brand's official knowledge base on its own domain: canonical facts, numbers and positioning in an extractable format. It is the document you want the models to use when they talk about you.

    Understand the deliverable (in Portuguese)

  • Structured data and llms.txt

The technical layer for machine reading: graph-based JSON-LD, connected entities, llms.txt and AI crawlers allowed by explicit rule in robots.txt and in the firewall.

  • Citable content with authorship

Definitions, sourced statistics, tables and FAQs signed by identifiable experts: machine-readable E-E-A-T, in the pattern the Princeton study measured as more visible in generative engine responses.

  • AI presence measurement

Share of answers: a recurring prompt panel, a log of citations, AI referral in analytics and correlation with pipeline. A monthly report, with no promise of guaranteed citation.

Method

How we work: the B.I.N.A. Method applied to GEO

The B.I.N.A. Method organizes the project into four layers. Each one has its deliverables and a completion criterion, and none skips the one before it, because content published on top of a confused entity does not build authority, only volume.

  1. Information Base

Diagnosis of the digital entity: how the company is described on its website, in external profiles, in search results and in AI answers. Next comes the Semantic Information Base: pillar pages, clusters, a glossary and the Official AI Knowledge Base on the company's own domain.

See layer B in the method
  2. Intent Intelligence

Mapping of the questions, comparisons, objections and sub-queries that an AI derives from a prompt. With that, we build the prompt panel across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews, monitored from the first month to the last.

See layer I in the method
  3. Authority Core

Citable content with authorship: definitions, sourced statistics, tables, FAQs and direct answers signed by experts, connected by internal links and backed by evidence, case studies, external references and earned mentions.

See layer N in the method
  4. Digital Asset

The technical layer for machine reading: graph-based JSON-LD, connected entities, llms.txt and AI crawlers allowed by explicit rule. On top of that comes the monthly measurement of AI presence: share of answers, logged citations and AI referral in analytics.

Investment and timeline

How much a GEO project costs and how long it takes

The investment is sized by three variables: the number of topic territories the brand needs to own, the technical state of the website and the volume of content to produce or rewrite. That is why the starting point is always the B.I.N.A. Diagnosis.

It audits AI presence, entity and citability. You receive a prioritized plan, with scope and price, before any larger contract.

Timelines follow the pattern of the projects published in the case studies. Projects with a sound technical base and existing content to restructure move faster than projects that start from scratch.

  • 60 to 90 daysThe first signs appear: presence in AI answers and positions in long-tail queries.
  • 6 to 12 monthsConsolidation of authority over a territory, with recurring citation.

GEO is asset building, not a campaign. What you pay for is the engineering of a source the AIs come to trust. What you measure is its presence, month by month.

Definition

What is GEO?

GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization, is the strategy of optimizing a company's information presence so that generative engines and AI systems understand, synthesize, recommend and cite its information.

The core logic of GEO

The clearer, more consistent, more specific and more verifiable a company's information base is, the easier it is for search engines and AIs to treat it as a source.

In practice, GEO combines technical SEO, semantic architecture, structured content, source authority, organized data and direct answers to increase the chance of a brand appearing as a reference in AI-generated answers.

This does not eliminate SEO: while traditional SEO makes sure the page is found, GEO works so that it is used in the answer. Crawlability, indexing, performance, internal links, headings, structured data and useful content remain the foundation. What changes is that optimization now also considers generative synthesis, direct answers, citations and entities. The full definition and the checklist are in the complete guide to Generative Engine Optimization.

How it works

How AI systems choose whom to cite: the four stages

Each platform has its own models and criteria, but the pattern is shared: understand the question, retrieve useful information, synthesize an answer and, when the product allows it, present the sources. On Google, the Google AI features (AI Overviews and AI Mode) may use query fan-out; ChatGPT Search and Perplexity operate as AI search, a conversational search supported by sources.

  1. Retrieval with query fan-out

The question is broken down into related sub-queries and the system looks for candidate documents in indexes and search engines. Without a crawlable base, the game ends here.

  2. Passage selection

The engine chooses specific passages, not whole pages, prioritizing clarity, specificity, verifiable data and consistency across sources.

  3. Grounded synthesis

The answer is generated anchored in the selected passages, combining entities, relationships and evidence from the retrieved sources.

  4. Attribution and citation

The system decides which sources to display as citations. Each platform attributes differently; diversifying signals is safer than betting on a single factor.

Implication for companies: vague, disorganized or isolated pages do not provide enough context to get past stage 2. A semantic information base helps the AI understand the relationship between topics, services, evidence and authority.

Comparison

GEO, SEO and AEO work together

GEO does not replace SEO and does not compete with AEO. The three disciplines complement each other in building an organic presence prepared for the new search.

SEO, AEO and GEO: focus, contribution and example
DisciplineMain focusHow it contributesPractical example
SEOVisibility in search engines, crawling, indexing, intent and organic rankings.Provides the technical and editorial base for pages to be found, understood and evaluated. An indexable, fast pillar page with internal links and useful content.
AEOOptimization for direct answers in answer engines, snippets, assistants and FAQs.Turns questions into clear, short, citable answers that are easy to extract. Objective answer blocks for questions such as “what is GEO?” or “does GEO replace SEO?”.
GEOPresence in AI-generated answers, syntheses, recommendations and citations from generative engines.Organizes the brand's semantic authority so that the AI understands the full context.Clusters, pillar pages, evidence, definitions, structured data and consistency across entities.

The New SEO is the integration of these layers. It stops being a technical checklist and becomes a strategy of semantic authority, informational clarity and long-term organic assets, described in AI SEO.

Who it is for

Where GEO makes a difference right now

The application changes with the segment, but the logic is the same: turning strategic knowledge into a clear, organized and trustworthy source.

  • Technical B2B company

Needs to explain complex solutions, comparisons, integrations and selection criteria to appear in consultative research and generative answers.

    Example: HPROJ case study

  • Clinic or specialized service

Needs authority built on educational content, authorship, trust criteria and responsible answers to sensitive questions.

Example: Dr. Ana Vega case study

  • Trade association or industry body

Needs to be the official source the AIs return for the name of the sector, with citation governance and disambiguation of similar names.

    Example: Bioenergia Brasil case study

  • E-commerce or product brand

Needs to structure categories, buying guides, attributes, comparisons and reviews to influence buying journeys.

    Example: Mantiqueira case study

  • Independent professional

Needs to spell out specialty, method, experience, area of practice and the answers to the audience's recurring questions.

Example: Dr. Alexander Kopelman case study

  • Company repositioning its brand

Needs to fix vague descriptions, disconnected pages and inconsistent messages before increasing editorial volume.

Strategy

The six pillars of a consistent GEO strategy

A good GEO strategy does not start with content volume. It starts with architecture, intent, context and authority, and only then defines the optimization strategies for each page.

  • Clear entity

Who the company is, what it does, for whom and with what evidence, described identically on the website, in external profiles and in structured data.

  • Mapped intent

Informational, comparative, commercial and transactional questions that an AI can break down into sub-queries.

  • Citable content

Objective passages, definitions, lists, tables and direct answers that make the information easier to extract and to reuse responsibly.

  • Verifiable authority

Sources, authorship, references, track record, case studies, research and editorial consistency that sustain trust.

  • Links and architecture

Pillar pages, clusters, glossary and commercial content connected in an understandable semantic network.

  • Organized data

Structured data, headings, breadcrumbs, schema and accessible text that help engines interpret the page.

Horizon

What changes with GEO and what is at risk without it

  1. Short term

Clearer pages, organized direct answers, less ambiguity and technical preparation for crawling, indexing and understanding.

  2. Medium term

Stronger pillar pages and clusters, internal links, topical authority and presence in informational and comparative searches.

  3. Long term

An organic digital asset, entity recognition, consistent presence in AI-assisted journeys and less dependence on paid media.

Beyond the results, I would highlight the clarity of the strategy, the organization of the work and the long-term vision Guto brought to the project.

Read the case study: 108 leads in June 2026, up from 60 a year earlier

Companies that do not organize their information base let third parties, competitors and generative models interpret the brand from incomplete signals. The most frequent risks:

  • Being mentioned in a generic or incomplete way.
  • Losing ground to competitors with clearer, better structured content.
  • Depending on ads alone to appear in the discovery stages.
  • Not controlling the concepts that define your category.
  • Having pages that are indexed but of little use for generative answers.
  • Producing volumes of AI-generated content without building semantic authority.

Measurement

How to measure GEO without promising what no method can guarantee

GEO should not be sold as a guarantee of AI citation. Generative platforms are dynamic and personalized, test different models and vary their answers according to context, location, history, language and index updates.

Even so, the strategy is tracked through practical indicators:

  • presence in the prompt panel and share of answers;
  • AI referral in analytics and growth in qualified organic traffic;
  • presence in brand and category queries;
  • quality of the descriptions generated about the company;
  • earned citations and assisted conversions.

The full protocol is in how to measure AI visibility.

The most important metric is not showing up in an AI answer once. It is increasing the company's capacity to be understood, trusted and chosen in journeys increasingly mediated by answer engines.

Is your question not here? The B.I.N.A. Diagnosis answers with your brand's data.

Take the free B.I.N.A. Diagnosis
What does GEO stand for?
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization: optimizing a company's information presence for generative engines, such as Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, which synthesize answers from retrieved sources. The goal is for the company to be understood, verified and cited as a source.
Does GEO replace SEO?
No. GEO extends SEO. SEO remains essential for crawling, indexing, performance, technical structure and useful content. GEO adds the layer of semantic understanding, generative answers, citations, entities and contextual coverage, which decides who makes it into the answer.
What is the difference between GEO and AEO?
AEO focuses on structuring direct answers for answer engines, snippets, FAQs and assistants. GEO focuses on increasing the company's clarity, authority and citability within AI-generated answers. A mature strategy uses AEO as part of GEO; Flowup handles both in the same project, and the AEO page details the answer layer.
What is the difference between a GEO agency and an SEO agency?
An SEO agency optimizes pages to hold positions in lists of results. A GEO agency engineers the brand's information base so that it is retrieved, understood and cited within AI-generated answers, which involves entity, verifiable authority, citable content, structured data and measurement of AI presence. Flowup does both in the same project, because citation depends on ranking but is not guaranteed by it.
How do you appear in AI answers?
There is no guarantee of appearing in AI answers. The path with the most evidence behind it is to make the site crawlable, indexable, clear and structured; publish pages that answer real questions with definitions, data and sources; have the content signed by identifiable experts; connect everything with internal links; and keep an official source for the brand on its own domain.
How does Flowup measure whether the brand is being cited by the AIs?
With three instruments: a recurring prompt panel across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews, which records in which answers the brand appears and how it is described; the monthly share of answers, which compares that presence with competitors' presence on the same set of questions; and AI referral in analytics, which shows the traffic arriving from those platforms. The protocol is in how to measure AI visibility.
Does structured data help with GEO?
Yes, as long as it represents visible and true information. Structured data in JSON-LD helps search engines and models understand entities, authorship, organization, FAQs and page context. It does not guarantee presence in generative answers, but it reduces ambiguity, and ambiguity is what most keeps a source away from a citation.
Is GEO just writing content with AI?
No. GEO is not automated content production. A serious strategy involves information architecture, intent research, conceptual clarity, evidence, editorial review, differentiation, structured data, brand governance and authority building. Content generated without information gain tends not to be retrieved.
Which companies need GEO?
Companies that depend on organic discovery, authority, market education or consultative comparison: B2B businesses, technology companies, clinics and specialized services, independent professionals, e-commerce businesses, trade associations and brands being repositioned. The clearest sign is the SERP itself: if the searches in your industry already show an AI Overview, the answer is being given with or without your brand.
What is a semantic information base?
It is the strategic organization of pages, concepts, services, entities, FAQs, clusters and evidence into a coherent architecture, so that people, search engines and AI systems understand the company and its core topics with less ambiguity. At Flowup, it is the first structural deliverable of a GEO project.
How long does GEO take to produce results?
In the projects published in the case studies, the first signs appear between 60 and 90 days: presence in AI answers for long-tail queries and position gains for terms in the territory being worked on. Consolidating authority over a topic, with recurring citation, takes 6 to 12 months. The pace depends on the technical state of the site, the existing authority and the competition.
How much does a GEO project cost?
The investment is sized by three variables: the number of topic territories, the technical state of the site and the volume of content to produce or rewrite. That is why the starting point is the B.I.N.A. Diagnosis, which audits AI presence, entity and citability and returns a prioritized plan with scope and price before any larger contract. You can request it through the buttons on this page, by WhatsApp or by email.
What is the difference between GEO and AI SEO?
In current market usage, AI SEO describes the broad adaptation of SEO to the era of generative answers; GEO is the specific discipline of citability in generative engines. Flowup treats AI SEO as the umbrella that connects technical SEO, AEO and GEO; the details are on the AI SEO page.
How can Flowup help with GEO?
With an authority engineering project in four layers, the B.I.N.A. Method: diagnosis of the entity and Semantic Information Base, mapping of intents and prompt panel, citable content with authorship and Official AI Knowledge Base, structured data, llms.txt and monthly measurement of AI presence. Public case studies with numbers are on this page and on the case studies page.
